Tomb Raider Anniversary: blog tasks

Language and Audience

Analyse the game cover for Tomb Raider Anniversary (above).

1) How does the cover communicate the genre of the game?
Through the use of the guns, the gold colours and the font.

2) How does the pose and costume of the character appeal to primarily male audiences?
Having her back to the camera on a side on pose shows both of her 'assets' which will appeal to men. This hyper-sexualisation has become a norm within the gaming industry. The gun strap round her thighs also resemble lingerie, which is another constructed way of sexualising the character.

3) How might the cover be read as empowering for female gamers?
Because she is the main focus and isn't shown to be a sidekick or companion.
