Go to the  Nieman Lab webpage (part of Harvard university) and watch the video of Clay Shirky presenting to Harvard students . The video is also available on YouTube below but the Nieman Lab website has a written transcript of everything Shiky says. 1) What has happened to print media in the last 30 years? In the last 30 years Print media has declined in its dominance of the media industry.Newspapers were the main news source for people.Newspapers was the most accessible outlay for people to get information. Since then, the development of technology such as the internet and TV have impacted the newspaper industry. Because these services were free, it became an expectation for people to gain their news for free, causing less people being willing to pay for their news. The development of mobile phones also allowed people to access the internet away from home, meaning they had access to lots of articles on the go. As a result newspapers have lost alot of power in the news industry as they struggle to make a profit to keep printing and pay journalists. 2) Why is the  Independent  newspaper such a good case study for the decline in print media? Media Magazine reading Media Magazine 55 has an overview of technology journalist Bill Thompson’s conference presentation on ‘What has the internet ever done for me?’ It’s an excellent summary of the internet’s brief history and its impact on society. Go to  our Media Magazine archive , click on MM55 and scroll to page 13 to read the article ‘What has the internet ever done for me?’ Answer the following questions: 1) Looking over the article as a whole, what are some of the positive developments due to the internet highlighted by Bill Thompson? The internet allows freedom of speech, freedom of assembly and freedom of press. 2) What are the negatives or dangers linked to the development of the internet? Bullying and abuse is easier to happen across the internet. The internet also has indecent images such as child abuse images and child pornography. Extremist ideas can also be poste and the radicalisation of a group can also happen because of the internet. An example of this is ISIS.
