Men's Health CSP analysis

Write a one-paragraph summary of your notes for each key concept from the booklet:

Media Language (e.g. conventions, narrative, genre etc.)

The magazine includes a black and blue colour scheme which are stereotypiocally associated with masculinity. Using these stereotypes make it clear to who the magazine is targeting with their product. The typography is also big and bold, giving it an aggressive, hyper-masculine feel to it. Vin Diesel is the magazines cover star and he is an embodiment of masculinity as he is muscular and his facial expression seems quite aggressive and stern showing dominance.

Media Audiences (e.g. demographics, psychographics, pleasures)

Men's Health has a target audience of men aged 25+ in the ABC1 category, as they can afford a slightly higher price of £4.10 a month for a magazine. The readers would most likely either be succeeders or aspirers. A succeeder would have the money to be able to buy the technology, watches, gym equipment and supplements  An aspirer would want to gain the body advertised throughout the magazine.

Media Representations (e.g. masculinity)

Stage 2 masculinity (conscious masculinity)  is portrayed through the magazine as they know they are reinforcing traditional and potential outdated masculine views. However, they reference to depression which goes against the stereotypes that men should be emotionally silent. Throughout the magazine , there are grooming tips which was something which was more associated with women. The constant advice on how to sculpt your body is also another stereotype of women as the men reading Men's Health are obsessed with losing weight and becoming even fitter.

2) Identify three specific aspects/conventions (e.g. cover line, colour scheme, text, image etc.) from each page of the CSP that you could refer to in a future exam. Explain why that particular aspect of the CSP is important - think about connotations, representations, audience pleasures, reception theory etc.

Front cover: Vin Diesel is an embodiment of the 'perfect' masculine body and Men's Health magazine is a guide on how to achieve similar results. It feels as if it reveals secrets to the audience in order to help them improve their body image.

3) Type up three media theories that you think are particularly relevant to analysing Men's Health and explain why they are significant:

Hall's 'masculinity in crisis' theory: It creates many readings of why Men's Health don't have multiple representations of masculinity, as their target audience is becoming more aware and accepting of how society is changing.

Gill's Female Gaze: Men are trying to improve their body image to please and appeal to women. They are taking care of themselves through grooming to make themselves better for the opposite sex.

Gelfer's Changing masculinty: Men's Health can be put in the second stage of masuclinity as they still reinforce traditional stereotypes however they also include updated view points and mindsets which would appeal to this generation.
