January assessment LR

Create a new blog post called 'January assessment learner response' and complete the following tasks:

1) Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential).

WWW: You raise some good points in places (moral panics and Islamophobia) but overall this needs to be a serious wake-up call. You either haven't revised enough or you didn't complete the initial work. Either way, you now know the consequences.

EBI: Serious revision required for whole industries topic, ownership and control, PSB. For Q3, one paragraph for a 20 mark/ 25 min question isnt enough. You also havent discussed the theory in the question.

2) Read the mark scheme for this assessment carefully. Identify at least one potential point that you missed out on for each question in the assessment.

Q1- Vertical and horizontal integration

Q2- PSB's dont chase high views as they are 'non profitable companies' as they have a unique funding model
Q3- Bandura's social learning theory3) On a scale of 1-10 (1 = low, 10 = high), how much revision and preparation did you do for this assessment?

4) Look at your answer for Question 1. Did you manage to write about three different strategies and three different benefits? It's vital you read the question and follow it exactly.

I wrote 3 different strategies and 3 different benefits, however 2 of them didnt relate to the question.

5) Look at your answer for Question 2. Did you follow the question guidance and write about both the BBC and commercial broadcasters? What could you have added to this answer to reach a higher mark?

I should have also spoken about commercial broadcasters such as ITV in order to reach a higher mark. I spoke more about the BBC vs Social media rather than also mentioning other commercial broadcasters.
6) Now look over your mark, teacher comments and the mark scheme for Question 3 - the 20 mark essay question on media effects theory. Write a new paragraph for this question based on the suggested theories/answers in the mark scheme. Make sure it is an extensive, detailed paragraph focused on the question and offering examples from the wider media.

Gerbners cultivation theory suggests that watching TV over a period of time will influence audiences opinions and ideas of everyday life. Some argue that it is damaging to the public. This is supported by the hypodermic needle theory that people are inactive vessels which the media injects information into the minds of the audience. This links to Gerbners theory as this means people will eventually end up taking in the information given through the media, reacting in a controlled way. An example of this could be the way The Sun constantly dehumanises Islam, making people have a moral panic towards Islam and terrorism, resulting in racism and discrimination against them. However, the Two step flow model theory can counteract this as it states that people are influenced by opinion leaders rather than TV itself. Especially within the digital age where people take advantage of freedom of speech on social media, people are following and believing people online who may have the same ideologies as themselves online and following them. This influences how they live and their opinions on different aspects of life based on the opinions of these 'leaders'. An example is Laura Bates who leads the 'Everyday Sexism' project. She is an opinion leader, and women who believe in standing up to sexism will follow her. She will eventually influence the way they live. They may react different to sexism differently after following Laura than they did before following, showing how people can be influenced by 'opinion leaders'
