Media regulation: blog task

1) What is regulation and why do media industries need to be regulated?

2) What is OFCOM responsible for?

3) Look at the section on the OFCOM broadcasting code. Which do you think are the three most important sections of the broadcasting code and why?

4) Do you agree with OFCOM that Channel 4 was wrong to broadcast 'Wolverine' at 6.55pm on a Sunday evening? Why?

5) List five of the sections in the old Press Complaints Commission's Code of Practice.

6) Why was the Press Complaints Commission criticised?

7) What was the Leveson enquiry and why was it set up?

8) What was the PCC replaced with in 2014?

9) What is your opinion on press regulation? Is a free press an important part of living in a democracy or should newspapers face statutory regulation like TV and radio?

10) Why is the internet so difficult to regulate?

) Regulation is what media companies are allowed to display on TV & Cinema and make sure that industries operate "fairly." It is needed as it gives a set of rules as to what can be seen on screen. An example of regulation is that anyone under 18 can't rent inappropriate film titles.

2) OFCOM regulates TV, the radio, some parts of the internet and telephone services and supply licenses to different media companies so that signals aren't interfered with and people are provided good quality services.

3) I think that the most important parts of the broadcasting code are: Protection of the under-18s' as if viewing harmful content young people can become desensitised to certain acts such as violence,  Elections and Referendums as media companies should provide an unbiased viewpoint on different issues, and finally.

4) I believe that Channel 4 shouldnt have played  "Wolverine" at 6:55pm due to the fact that families would usually be watching TV at this time together and the violence within the film may not be suitable for family viewing, especially younger viewers. "Wolverine" isnt a family orientated film and it wasnt aimed at that specific focus group. It would've been better for Channel 4 to play "Wolverine" after 7pm.

5) 5 Serious sections of the PCC Code are, in no particular order: Children in Sex Cases, Victims of Sexual Assault, Reporting of Crime, Confidential Sources, Discrimination

6) The PCC was criticised as it has no power, in the eyes of it''s critics, meaning that if a newspaper was to break the rules made by the PCC, the best thing that they can get is an apology from the newspaper company. Also, it has been criticised for allowing newspapers to break the rules as there is no real deterrent for newspapers to avoid breaking rules.

7)This is the investigation of the press, how they obtain their information and if it is an ethical method, whether is it right or wrong.

8)The PCC was replaced with the "IPSO," Independent Press Standards Organisation.

9)To an extent, free press should be allowed, but the way the information is found should remain to be right, morally, and ethically so that nobody is made upset or angered that private information is not released to the general public. It is because of this reason, i believe that they should also be regulated to an extent, similar to newspapers, TV and radio, so that information that should stay private, stays private. Privacy is very important and shouldnt be breached in most circumstances.

10) The internet is so difficult to regulate due to the fact that certain media products, e.g. music videos, aren't regulated, meaning that anyone can see the overly sexualise their videos. Also, anyone can access the internet at any time so  minors could potentially be able to view it, meaning that the violence and sexual behaviour has entirely new and unregulated platform for it to be displayed on.
