Narrative

1) Give an example from film or television that uses Todorov's narrative structure of equilibrium, disequilibrium and new equilibrium.
Above is the movie "The Matrix" and I believe is uses Todorov's narrative structure of equilibrium as the protagonist lives a normal life at the start of the movie. However he then suffers from various nightmares and finds out why they occur. He is then given a choice if he wants to partake in an ongoing war or go back to normal life. He chooses to take part, which is the disequilibrium.

2) Complete the activity on page 1 of the Factsheet: find a clip on YouTube of the opening of a new TV drama series (season 1, episode 1). Embed the clip in your blog and write an analysis of the narrative markers that help establish setting, character and plot.

3) Provide three different examples from film or television of characters that fit Propp's hero character role.
Iron Man- "Iron Man 1, 2 & 3"
Batman- "The Dark Knight"
Thor- "The Avengers"

4) Give an example of a binary opposition.
An example of binary opposition is Batman and the Joker as they have opposing views and usually end up in conflict because of this.

5) What example is provided in the Factsheet for the way narratives can emphasise dominant ideologies and values?
"The winner often represents the dominant ideas and values of our
culture. When the policeman captures the criminal in a crime drama–
the ideology of the value of law and order is emphasised."

6) Why do enigma and action codes (Barthes) offer gratifications for audiences?
Enigma and actions codes allow audiences to be able to interpret scenes in the movie in their own way which could give them gratification. Audiences may also predict what happens in the future and may gain gratification if their predictions are true, however some movies provide a twist which could shock the audience and oppose their prediction.
7) Write a one-sentence summary of the four different types of TV narrative:
  • Episodic narrative (the series)
  • An episodic narrative is a story that is told through a series of episodes, or segments. It goes on for a certain amount of time
  • Overarching narrative (the serial)
  •  serial is a section format by which a single larger work, often a work of film and episodes, is published in sequential instalments.
  • Mixed narrative
  • This may revolve round a central theme (e.g. troublesome neighbours) or group of people.
  • Multi-strand overlapping narrative (soap narrative)
  • Popular in broadcast TV (e.g. soaps) and film. Involves more than one narrative running parallel involving different characters and locations.

8) How does the Factsheet suggest adverts use narrative?
